Buying the Registered Agent Without the Legal Platform

A Legal Platform, If That Is What You Want

Rocket Lawyer sells a document library, guided templates, and access to attorneys, with registered agent service available alongside it. The agent price is $125 a year, and it is $125 whether you hold a membership or not and whichever tier you sit on. There is no introductory rate that expires and no discount that only new customers see. In a market where the second-year number is often the interesting one, a company that quotes one figure and keeps it deserves the credit.

You May Be Buying a Suite to Get One Seat

The gap between $125 and our $99 is twenty-six dollars a year. That is small, and nobody should switch providers over twenty-six dollars alone. The question worth asking is a different one: what else is in the box, and will you open it?

If you draft contracts monthly, want a lawyer on call, and expect to use the template library, then the surrounding platform is the purchase and the agent is a convenience thrown in beside it. If your Idaho LLC's actual recurring obligations are a street address, a person present during business hours, and one filing a year, the platform is inventory you are renting and never touching.

Idaho makes that second scenario more common than you might guess, because the annual compliance load here is genuinely light. The report required under Idaho Code § 30-21-213 is a verification screen rather than a document you draft: the state pre-fills what it already knows, you confirm it, and the filing fee is $0 when it goes through online. There is not much legal work to outsource, which is precisely why a legal platform can end up unused.

One Line Item, Priced Once

Idaho gives you a wide field of replacements. An individual qualifies when they live in Idaho and have reached eighteen. A company qualifies when it already holds a registration with that same office. Idaho works from the Model Registered Agents Act framework and distinguishes commercial agents from noncommercial ones. The one thing that cannot take the role is an assumed business name, which is a distinction people trip over when they trade under something other than the entity's legal name.

Then there is the address, where Idaho is more explicit than most states bother to be. It has to be a physical Idaho street address. Post office boxes do not qualify, and neither do commercial personal mail boxes, meaning the numbered box you rent behind the counter of a shipping store. Writing it as a suite number does not fix it.

The filing itself is one document, capable of revising the agent, the registered office, or the two together, unnumbered like every other Idaho business form, handed to the Idaho Secretary of State's office. Online the state's charge is $0; on paper it is $20 for manual processing.

Sequence: the statement names the incoming agent, so the appointment has to be real before the paperwork can honestly say so.
