The $249 attributed to LegalZoom is LegalZoom's own posted rate, not our characterization of it, and both numbers deserve your own look.

The Name Does Carry Weight

LegalZoom is the name people outside this industry actually recognize, and that recognition is not nothing. It means a bookkeeper, a lender, or a business partner will not ask who your provider is, and for some owners that quiet familiarity is worth paying for. There is also no pretense in how the service is sold: the price is on the page, it does not change after the first year, and nobody is engineering a surprise into month thirteen.

One Price, Charged Again Each Year

Registered agent service through LegalZoom runs $249 a year. We looked for an introductory discount and did not find one, so the opening figure and the renewal figure are the same, and the renewal happens on its own unless you intervene. Against our $99 the difference is $150 in the first year and $150 in every year after it. Ten years of an Idaho LLC is $2,490 on one side and $990 on the other.

Auto-renewal is a mechanic worth noting rather than condemning. It exists so nobody accidentally lets their agent lapse, which is a sensible default for a role Idaho requires you to fill without interruption. The consequence is only that the decision gets made by inaction, and $249 leaves your account on a date somebody else picked.

What that $150 a year is buying is worth naming precisely, because it is not extra legal protection. The only way to make it cost anything is to send paper, which adds a $20 charge for manual handling.

Order of operations is the part people get wrong.
